Five pitchers/strong offense combine to help lead Grande to 2nd win

Updated Tuesday May 9, 2017 by WBB.

A combination of five different pitchers and some strong offense helped lead Grande Masonry to victory over visiting Ferreira's at Seveney Field on Sunday afternoon.

Grande's Tom McGraw, in his first outing as pitcher this season, provided an important hitless/scoreless inning of relief in the 5th inning, highlighted by his own diving catch of a ball near the mound and then finishing the frame with a strikeout.  He was preceded by reliever John Bliss who inherited a bases-loaded situation in the 2nd inning and effectively worked out of the trouble, providing three very solid innings of relief.  Tommy McSparren then pitched a scoreless 6th inning and returned to get the final out of the game.

The Grande offense was again in high gear, this time against two hard-throwing Ferreira's right-handers, putting up double digit runs for the second game in a row.  Bliss helped lead the offense with three hits and three runs including an exciting steal of home, while 'Big Mike' Sherman contributed two RBIs helping plate McSparren multiple times.  Grande hitters had many good at-bats, and were subsequently aggressive on the base paths, scoring a few runs from third base on wild pitches and passed balls.

On defense, Sherman also hustled to make an important catch on a pop-up in foul territory as the 1B, and McSparren as SS sprinted into shallow left field to make a terrific catch on a fly ball and help snuff out a Ferreira's rally later on in the game.
