Big 1st inning helps propel Grande to victory

Updated Sunday May 14, 2017 by WBB.

In Friday evening action on Seveney Field, team Grande Masonry sent ten batters to the plate in the bottom of the 1st inning and scored five runs against A-1 Paving before the third out was recorded.  Grande hitters had two singles, two walks and three "reach-on-errors" during the early uprising with each of the first four batters crossing home plate.  Michael Gabriel and Jeffrey Brady each made solid contact while contributing RBIs and scoring a run during the inning.

A pitching duel subsequently ensued with Grande scoring just two more runs the rest of the way, while Grande pitchers allowed just one A-1 Paving runner to score.  Six different pitchers threw for Grande -- Doug Connors came on in relief in the 1st inning to quell a big threat and finished up with 2 and 2/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit pitching while John Bliss came on to end a bases-loaded threat with a big strikeout in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Cal Mahoney and Zach Sherman followed in effective relief on the mound, each notching a scoreless inning. Bliss returned in the 7th, locking things down and ensuring the Grande win.

Great defense by many players, particularly around the entire infield, helped the Grande pitching effort. A 7th inning defensive game highlight was provided by Thomas Kyros at 2B, ranging far to his left to spear a very hard-struck grounder and then making an accurate throw to just get the runner at first base.

Amazingly, Grande batters (in 33 total plate appearances) did not strike out during the game.  By putting the ball in play the Grande hitters forced seven errors by the A-1 defenders.  Christian Claytor, Michael Gabriel and John Bliss all reached base twice via a single and a BB; Jeffrey Brady and Zach Sherman each reached base twice as well while Tommy McGraw and Thomas Kyros each contributed an RBI in the win.
